Blogs VS Magazines

This Months Vogue | Pineapple and Banna smoothie | Avocado & Peanut Butter Rice cakes with Almonds and Honey

A bit of a different post today but I felt like writing a big chatty blog post about something I have been talking about a lot recently at University: Blogs vs Magazines. I have participated in a number of my friends focus groups and filled out a number of questionnaires in the past month for people's dissertation's about blogs. One focus group in particular was about blogs vs magazines, and comparing their influence on us as fashion students and our levels of trust towards each one. To me I find this a very interesting subject, as I love both mediums, however predominantly, I read way more blog's than I do magazines. It is not that I enjoy magazines any less, but apart from my monthly Vogue subscription, I seldomly buy them these days. I see them as more of a treat to read, maybe on a long journey or to read on holiday but not part of my day to day life. Whereas blogs, I more or less read them every day.

For me I trust both mediums. Magazines to me provide expert knowledge from people working within the industry, whereas blogs provide more honest, personal opinions on style and beauty. I personally trust a lot of bloggers even when they do sponsored posts, if I have read them for a long time, or the brand fits their style or personality, I trust their opinion. I think blogs are much more relatable and it is so easy to click straight from your favourite blogger straight to buy the product/clothing they are talking about it, providing a more instant shopping experience almost.

The growth of bloggers into being recognised as a mainstream medium is amazing, I think we should embrace new online developments in media and celebrate that full-time bloggers have established themselves within the fashion and beauty industry and are doing it all by themselves with their own hard work! On the flip side, I know that the increasing development of online medium's including blogs is having a detrimental effect on magazines and their sales, which does make me sad. We seen it last year with the change of Company Magazine to purely an online magazine, which I was really gutted about, I always loved that magazine. I really hope others don't follow in the next few years because even though I don't read them as often as I used to, theres nothing like chilling out and loosing yourself within the pages of a magazine.

I would love to hear your opinions on this subject! What do you prefer to read?

  3. I'm not a massive magazine reader either but I do like to read them from time to time. I agree with what you said about blogs being much more relatable, I think it's because your receiving first hand information/opinions etc... from someone whose on 'your level' and it's so easy to connect with them!
