How To Detox Your Wardrobe In Collaboration With Mercari

Having a de-cluttered and streamlined wardrobe is something I have always longed to do. So this year one of my New Year's resolutions was to have a huge clear out and get rid of anything I just don't wear anymore. Luckily Mercari challenged me to a their wardrobe #detoxchallenge at the start of January which has motivated me to get started. Not only does having a wardrobe declutter allow you to have a tidy wardrobe, but you can also make some extra pennies in the process by selling to new homes. I thought I would share with you my experience on the Mercari app so far, as well with some tips and tricks on how you can also do the same to your wardrobe.

First things first, how do you decide what to get rid of?

I would start by getting rid of anything you haven't worn in the past year. Even if you think 'but maybe I will have a perfet occasion for this one day', you most likely won't and even if you do, you might buy something new instead and this item will go another year still having not been worn. You need to be ruthless and just get rid of it.

It is best also at this point to make three piles. One pile of things to sell, one pile to give to the charity shop and one pile that just need thrown out.

If there is anything you are unsure about, maybe try it on and if you don't love it or it doesn't fit well anymore, you should also get rid of it.

Don't just think about getting rid of clothes either, you know those boots that you bought from Zara a year ago and have worn just once? Yes, those can go. Even accessories, bags, jewellery can be cleared out and sold on to new homes. If you just aren't getting the wear out of something, sell it to someone who actually will. Trust me, you won't even notice it has gone.

I would highly recommend the app Mercari to sell through. I have found the app so easy to use and it has been such a great tool to help sell my clothes. So who actually are Mercari you ask?

Mercari is a huge buy and sell marketplace that gives you a simple and secure way to buy and sell unwanted items directly via an app on your smartphone. It was originally founded in Japan but has just recently launched in the UK. Once you have downloaded the app and created your profile, Mercari allows you to list an item for sale in under a minute, making selling on the app every so quick and easy A huge added bonus with this app is that there are absolutely no selling fee's, which is amazing!

Once you have sold an item via the app, the buyer will pay for the item and you will have three days to then ship your item. Once the buyer as received their item, Mercari will then release the payment to you. All payments you receive are added to your balance on your Mercari account, which you can then withdraw at any time you wish.

The app is free to download and if you follow this link here it will to take you to my profile and you can see what I am selling, you still might be able to grab yourself a bargain.

The photo you post alongside your listing when selling is key. This ultimately sells the item to your potential buyer. You want to try and take your photo's in natural light, with a nice clean background.

I tend to take mine against a white throw, so that you can see the item I am selling clearly. This makes the item stand out and be more desirable. I also tend to add some props, throwing in a few plants or flowers around it makes it more aesthetically pleasing. I also try to add a few photo's of me actually wearing the item in the listing, as this shows the buyer how it looks on and they might be more inclined to buy. Often if I haven't posted any photo's of me wearing the clothes, I will get lot's of messages asking to see this.

I have honestly found having a clear out so therapeutic. It has been great to start the year with a huge clear out, leaving my wardrobe refreshed and making some extra cash in the process. The Mercari App has made it ever so easy to do and I now have lots of room in my wardrobe for some new clothes this year.

If you would like to give it a go, you can download the Mercari App here and get started. You can also follow my profile here to see what bits I am selling.

If you do sign up to the app, you can also use the code 'PAQKYN' and you will get £2 to spend on the app on your first purchase - happy shopping!
