SELF LOVE

Recently another blogger wrote an Instagram caption asking her followers to write something underneath that they love about themselves and I really struggled to think of something. It got me thinking about how hard we can be on ourselves, we can be overly self-critical and I am sure we are our own worst enemies. I think this partly comes down to is the world in which we live in today. The social landscape has changed dramatically and we now find ourselves we inundated with comparison every single day through the world of social media. It is a tool that we didn’t have before, which has turned into such a huge force in all our lives. It can be amazing, the internet and social media has so many positive attributes,  it allows us to connect with millions of people all around the world. But there are negatives, one being that we can now compare our lives and appearances to strangers online all around the world, simply at the touch of a button.

To summarise, we all have way too much comparison these days through the influence of social media that I think it’s important to remember that these lives are filtered.  These can give us an unrealistic representation of people’s lives and their appearance. Don’t be so hard on yourself, stop girl crushing on everyone else and think about yourself a little more. Don’t get lost in other peoples online lives, that you think you, your appearance and your life is not good enough or not like somebody else’s.

We need to focus on ourselves a little more, practice self love rather than self loath. Self love is defined as the regard for one’s own well-being and happiness, Self love is important to living well. So how can we practise a little more self love might you ask? I have listed my top tips below, most of which I need to start following ASAP. (Just to add, buying yourself clothes and material things is not practicing self love as these will make you happy only temporary).

1.     SELF CARE ~ Self Care is a huge aspect of Self Love. Look after yourself, make yourself a priority. This includes exercising regularly, eating healthily, getting a good night’s sleep. This extends to pampering yourself, doing your nails, giving yourself face-mask, making sure to remove your makeup every night.

2. ME TIME ~   Prioritise more ‘ME’ time. Following on from the above, do things just for you and nobody else. Do things that you enjoy. Go to a yoga class, have a pamper night, enjoy a bubble bath, read a book. It is important to make time for these things. Not just once in a while, but try and plan to do this at least once or twice a week. Allow yourself to use this time to really shut off from everything else and truly relax.

3. DON'T BE SO HARD ON YOURSELF ~  Life can be busy, but don’t put so much pressure on yourself all the time, accept that sometimes there isn’t enough time to do everything you need to. Also learn to let things go easier, holding onto things in the past can weigh you down, forgive and forget to then allow you to move forward.

4. MINDFULNESS ~ Try to have a more open mind, encourage positive thoughts and banish any judging, self critical attitudes. You are in charge of your own thoughts, so don’t let yourself have negative thoughts about yourself. This is something that we can learn over time, we have to try to control the thoughts we want to have.

5. STOP THE COMPARISON AND APPRECIATE YOURSELF Start appreciating yourself for who you are, write a list of things that you are good at and love about yourself. Focus on the positives and separate that away from your negative emotions about yourself. There is a great quote about comparison which is ‘don’t compare your Chapter 1 to someone else’s Chapter 20’, we all do things differently, things happen at different time's for people and that is ok. Life takes us all in different places for a reason. Another great way to stop the comparison is to have a digital detox and start incorporating this into your week as a way to allow yourself to shut off from the social world and focus on yourself.

Self love is a process, it isn’t going to happen overnight but hopefully these steps can help us get there. I also want to highlight that I am no expert, and this is what I believe will help me on my journey towards self love. I would love if you could share your experience and tips to practice self love?
